Our Favorite Meat Loaf is sure to be your favorite meat loaf, too. This classic comfort recipe will take your taste buds down meat loaf memory lane. Don't forget to serve it up with some creamy mashed potatoes!

What You'll Need

  • 1 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 3 slices white bread, torn into small pieces
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup (see Options)

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except ketchup; mix well. Press mixture evenly into a 9" x 5" loaf pan; spread ketchup over top.

  3. Bake 60 to 65 minutes, or until no pink remains and juices run clear. Remove from oven, drain, and allow to sit 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Options

  • If you prefer to do without the ketchup, that’s okay. You could use spaghetti sauce or just leave the top plain. We like to serve this with lots of gravy. Mmmm...

Thanks for your comment. Don't forget to share!

Nice basic recipe to which you can add flavor if desired using different herbs.

I use crushed salad croutons instead of bread crumbs.

The recipe doesn't call for bread crumbs

Derpy Hooves mind your manners! I suppose U are perfect in everything U do. no 16yr. is perfect! people make mistakes everyday. SO--- droupy drawers, mind your manners!!!!!

This is a very good basic meatloaf recipe that can have a lot of people's own choices of additions and subtractions. I tried it on its' own before commenting, and as I thought, was just needed some extra ingredients to make it really good.

More than half of you people don't even use proper grammar. And im 16. Grow up and learn to use english properly.

If you don't like peoples grammar, DON'T READ THE REVIEWS!! Be thankful you can get these WONDERFUL receipts!!! YOUR grammar is WRONG..im.....I'm

leblanc, I am not trying to be nasty but dear,,,read your post....we get wonderful recipes,,,not receipts.

Thank you )

Actually many years ago people did use the word receipts instead of recipes LOL

easy and enjoyable shall make again

Cut up 3 strips of bacon and place on top of meatloaf. Thias will make ot real moist and DEElicious

larrylike, you are right, I also put bacon on my meatloaf,,,it makes a world of difference.

this was so yummy! i skipped the catsup & served it with y homemade mushroom gravy. ummmm! so delicious it just tastes like more.

this is great. meatloaf is a fine working persons meal. can't beat it !

try adding some brown sugar to the ketchup....talk about yummy!!!!!

I've read the comments on several of these meatloaves and can't believe how many people make theirs without gr pepper and celery. I saute diced pepper, celery, garlic and onion in a little butter and add it to my meat with other spices. One comment never heard of it. Maybe he or she should try it. you might lie it.

hi momnpops1, i make it just like you do and also add 1/2 carrot cut really small..and its delicccccccious :)

I totally agree with you, except that I never tried adding celery to meatloaf. I'm sure it adds a lot more great flavor. Did you ever try adding a bit of finely grated carrot to your meatloaf? They add such a nice flavor ! I (as well) use a little milk in order to bring the mixture to the right consistancy-instead of adding water.

Old fashioned flavor and texture. Wonderful taste. Husband is a meat loaf fan and he said it is how meatloaf is supposed to taste. I served it without ketchup, with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Yum. The rest is in the freezer for next week.

good recipe but i soak the bread in milk... no need to tear it up... no need to measure milk just take the soaked bread and put in bowl.. makes for a moister meatloaf. i added some garlic to this as well as some onion crackers.... option: my grandmother always topped hers with tomato soup last fifteen minutes.. :)

We are big fans of meatloaf in this household. I am always adding different recipes to my file, I will be trying this one out soon. Thanks!

looks great!!!!!!!!!!!

I use my favorite steak sauce on top of meatloaf, before baking it of course. Yummy.

not a fan of meat loaf:I

Can't wait to serve it!!!

great meal! we love meatl loaf

I can just about guarantee you that 65 minutes for a 1 1/2 pound meat loaf is not enough time; the inside will still have pink areas. Calibrate your oven, use a meat thermometer or at a minimum take the time out to 1 hr 45 min.

So where is the recipe for the gravy???

I agree leediablo!! Just what I was thinking

The Mr. Food Test Kitchen has many recipes for gravy. Take a look here for find the you like the best; http://www.mrfood.com/?task=search&search_term=gravy Enjoy!

Mr. Food thank you for reminding me of my (Mom's meatloaf recipe)! I haven't made this for a long time, and this was the way she made hers. I have mixed a little brown sugar in with the ketchup for the topping; also shredded carrots added gives it a little more nutrition and color. Oatmeal works good (instead) of bread for ones who need 'gluten-free' food; this also is nutritious. Thanks again for (all) your easy and great recipes! Sherry

How much oatmeal do you use to substitute for the bread?

Why is it every meat loaf or meat ball recipe asks for bread in some form? to me it makes the product mushy

actually, the breadcrumbs act as the bulk....try using more and the meat loaf will get dryer.

I never add bread, just green pepper, celery, onion, egg, catsup, bacon on top - delish! (if I don't have bacon that day I put one of the family names on top w/catsup BOBBY

The torn bread pieces and milk constitute what is known as a panade, and is a sure-fire way to make meat loaf, burgers, etc. more tender and juicy.

when I click on "classic fried chicken" , one of the ingredients should be chicken .

question ? what if u do not have dry mustard?? wil it realy make a difference? not to use...hmm thanks spkaren@aol.com

I have used regular yellow mustard out of the fridge...same thing...just liquid and you need a bit more......

i have to eat gluten free so i use oat for a binder it is so good

It exceeded my expectations! I've recommend it my family and friends.

My husband is unable to any style of cooked tomatoes and didn't want plain meatloaf, so I hardly ever made meatloaf. After twenty years, I finally tried making a beef gravy with leftover juices from beef roast. We eat meat far more often than we use to. Turkey meatloaf with gravy is delicious too! Kathy
