Homemade Cracker Candy

What is cracker candy? It's a simple homemade candy that uses crackers as a base. In our recipe for Homemade Cracker Candy we start with buttery crackers, which add a little bit of saltiness to our sweet confection. Then, we top those with a layer of caramel and a layer of chocolate before finishing off our candy with some chopped pecans. The results are so good, we're sure that once you give this cracker candy a try you'll be making it over and over again.
What You'll Need
- 24 round buttery crackers
- 3/4 cup butter (1-1/2 sticks)
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans
What to Do
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9- x 13-inch baking pan with aluminum foil; lightly coat foil with cooking spray. Arrange crackers in a single layer in pan.
- In a medium saucepan, bring butter and brown sugar to a boil; cook 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Pour mixture over crackers.
- Bake 5 minutes; turn off oven. Sprinkle crackers with chocolate chips and let stand in oven 3 minutes, or until chocolate is melted. Spread chocolate evenly over crackers. Sprinkle pecans over chocolate.
- Refrigerate until firm, then cut with a sharp knife into pieces. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator.

This is similar almost the exact same recipe I use when I make Passover candy (Jewish Holiday Passover) I use a jelly roll cookie sheet and I line it with tin foil and then with parchment paper that . I put the large unsalted Matzoh on the parchment paper. Make the butter and brown sugar mixture. Put in oven and take out as your directions. Spread the chips, choc, or butterscotch spread with a knife after about 5 mins. sprinkle on any type of nuts, I take a sifter and sprinkle on powdered sugar. Refrigerate. When cool break it up.

I made this again for Christmas, but I used Club crackers, they fit in the pan easier and give it a buttery taste. I send it to friends and family and everyone loves it. It is very addictive. The salty and sweet together. Oh its so good!!

Really good but very sweet. Also extremely easy to make. Seems like I had it made in less than 5 minutes. It was a hit with the students where I teach. Think I am going to make for Christmas.

I made these last year for family gatherings at Christmas and New Years. These are very popular. People can't get enough of the sweet, salty, and buttery flavors, so I will be making these again. I'll make a batch for work for Halloween, and plan on making more for the winter holidays.

Been making this for years but always used saltine crackers before.. later I used the unsalted crackers and now I tried the round buttery crackers they are all very good and they all work well

This is so rich and satisfying! The butter crackers taste like a flaky pie crust! I prefer Club butter crackers to Ritz for this recipe. They're more delicate. I love the pecans, but you could use walnuts instead, and black walnuts if you love that earthy flavor. Black walnuts are more expensive and harder to find, but that's what makes that special nutty fudge taste so unique when you find it-black walnuts! I gew up with a stand of black walnut trees in a field next to my house. We used to pick them off the ground-the large round green spheres that would stain your hands black if you didn't wear gloves peeling off the thick, tough outer layers.

The chips actually don't look like they've melted until you spread them with a spatula. As you spread them, they melt into a nice gooey topping. These are delicious )

I made this last Christmas and followed the exact recipe and it is fantastic. All my family and friends loved it. I can't imagine it with saltines, the round buttery crackers give it that salty taste with all the sweet. Yum!!

I must tell the truth I saw Trisha Yearwood make these and never thought much about them until I found sugar free chocolate chips and a sugar free sub. to make the toffee part. So Thanks For The Recipe...

I must be gluten free and dairy free. Used GF crackers, Earth Balance 1/2 tsp. vanilla to mask the taste of Earth Balance. Turned out okay...sure miss the taste of butter( The "toffee" was runny/liguidy and not like the video. What can I do to thicken the "toffee"? Thank you for the wonderful recipes!

Hello! Unfortunately, you cannot use Hershey bars instead of the chocolate chips. The candy bar is milk chocolate and the chocolate chips are semi-sweet, which means they will harden better when melted.

I made this at fishing resort - I used Ritz crackers and cashews - a 1 gallon bag did not make it past the first bonfire - everyone there copied the recipe and my copy got "lost" I had to come back to Mr. Food for another copy - I am going to make it for a bake sale.

This recipe was making the rounds under the name Christmas Crack because it's so addictive. I like a salty and sweet combo, so I skip the nuts and sprinkle seasonally colored M&M candies and broken up thin pretzel sticks on top, pressing lightly into the chocolate so they'll stay put.

I use saltine cracker and break pieces to fit any gaps 1 cup brown sugar & 1 cup butter m together 1 minute pour over crackers bake in oven a few minutes till good & bubbly pour a package of chocolate chips over pop back in oven a minute then spread with knife I also sprinkle with chopped walnuts while still warm

I found the "original" on a blog: it called for matzo and sprinkled sea salt onto chocolate layer, no nuts. I made this with saltines (and high quality chocolate) for my brother's Xmas present and he loved when he got an especially salty bite. So, for his BDay, I will sprinkle sea salt onto the warm chocolate. Have seen versions with other than nut garnish: additional crackers (crumbled), crushed peppermint hard candy, dried fruit. Whatever you want to use or add, I VERY STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING THE BEST CHOCOLATE you can afford AND letting the toffee cool a few minutes before adding the chocolate. So disappointing to wait for the candy to cool, only to find the chocolate is scorched and grainy, or has an off flavor.

I use milk chocolate chips and melt them in the microwave(15 seconds, stir, repeat until smooth) then spread on crackers. easier than trying to spread chips.

When making this recipe I double it, using one with the saltines, the other with the buttery cracker, both are equally addictive. I also use the Hershey bar, easier to melt. For the topping I use both the toffee and pecans. I guess what ever trips your trigger. I got the calling for some chocolate so I guess I better start baking some CRACK. ''OOH ITS SO GOOD''

Instead of the chocolate chips try Hershey Chocolate Bars. They melt quickly and are easier to smooth out.

I lowered the oven temp to 325 and cooked for 15 minutes turning the cookie sheet once during baking. These are a simple tasty candies that can be made in minutes!

I tried this twice and the chocolate chips did not melt. I even tried to put the oven temp. higher and the burned.

I made these with saltines, but I couldn't get the brown sugar mixture to get firm.I cooked for the full 3 minutes.What could be wrong?

You need to let the brown sugar mixture to heat to soft ball temperature, it starts at 324F. If you do not have thermometer, when ready a small amount of syrup dropped into chilled water forms a ball, but flattens when picked up with fingers

I made this every Christmas or for Graduation Parties for the family. It's Good for you with the dark chocolate and they are addictive. Nice crunch and sometimes on the ends it is sometimes chewy goodness. Yeah these are Easy, Fast & Wonderful Treats

I have made this twice now. The first time with buttery crackers....with part semi-sweet chips and peanut butter chips. The loved the combo of the chips but thought it was almost too sweet. Next time i made it with saltines and just semi-sweet chips...I thought it was better ....not so sweet. Used Walnuts both times instead of Pecans...they are my nut of choice. I will make them again....with the combo of chocolate/peanut butter chips...but I will definately use saltines.

We have been making these for a few years now, we always use saltines. Also I would suggest only 1/2 the chocolate, as others have mentioned. One cup is plenty and makes a well-balanced treat. Two cups is too chocolately, we tried it once and didn't like it as well.

I made this with saltine crackers and doubled the butter and brown sugar. I also used milk chocolate chips. This way they tasted alot better. I will have to try the buttery crackers.

I actually use the saltine crackers. In fact I purchased some last week and then couldn't remember why for the life of me I bought them, since I never do. Thanks for the reminder. Will drag out my recipe and make my version since I aready know it's a keeper.

I make this for Passover, using matzo. It's known as "Matzo Crack" because it is so insanely addictive. I sometimes use white choc chips as well as semi-sweet for a yummy swirly effect.

I make Pine Bark which is pretty much the same as this recipe except I use 1 sleeve of saltines & you add almond extract to the butter & brown sugar. Yum! That recipe is Paula Deen's & it's on the Food Network website.

this is very close to a recipe I make at Passover using Matzo crackers. But after making the caramel sauce and poured over crackers we bake it in the oven and then put chocolate over--this recipe seems a bit simpler and easier--thanks for sharing.

Sounds like the mock "English Toffee" we make during the holidays. Note; if you cooke the sugar and butter on the stove watch it closely. Easier way is to simply melt butter in microwave and add brown sugar. Stir until dissolved then pour over crackers (we use saltines).

Since there is no picture I am not sure what you mean by miniature round buttery crackers, do you mean like Ritz miniatures? I had a recipe about like this that used plain soda crackers but something "buttery" sounds even better
