What You'll Need
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 (14.5-ounce) can sauerkraut, well drained
- 1/3 cup cider vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
What to Do
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sugar; cook, stirring constantly, 10 minutes or until sugar turns a light caramel color. Add onion and sauerkraut; simmer, uncovered, over medium heat 10 minutes, stirring often. (Sugar will harden when onion and sauerkraut are added but will dissolve as mixture simmers.) Add vinegar and caraway seeds; simmer, uncovered, 15 minutes. Store, uncovered, in refrigerator up to 1 week.
