This is essentially a good recipe but needs some tweaking ---at least I feel so. A few garlic cloves smashed, a tablespoon or two of tomato paste and some beef stock and half a cup of dry red wine. I would brown the meat in butter and some oil first before going into crock pot. For heaven's sake, get fresh mushrooms --they could be added in last hour of cooking so they retain there shape and don't disappear in the gravy. I know I am basically reconstructing the recipe but I do like a lot of mix of flavor components. As far as one poster suggested to boil the beef for one hour? Must have been looped on something---why would you do this? LOL!

This sounds tasty; Mr. Food does it again.........thank you! As far as the 'can gravy,' it may be a help to new cooks who have not learned to make their own gravy. These are easy recipes for everyone to follow, new cooks and the more experienced cooks. Oh by the way to [beamcdaniel] ..... I've had the 'browning sauce' for ages in my cabinet too, and still good. (I think they found it still in King Tut's tomb) !!! =-) good day to ya, 'little ole' Ohio cook'

One brand of browning and seasoning sauce is called Kitchen Bouquet and is available in your grocery store. If you can not locate it, please ask the store manager. Thank you for your question!

kitchen Bouquet is in the ketchup and mustard isle along with the hot sauces and barbecue sauces Yes ,you can make your own gravy and use fresh mushrooms if you happen to have fresh mushrooms on hand they never last long have to use them up right away.. but canned mushrooms work well if you don't happen to have them ...meat juices (and a tad of butter if needed ) a little flour water or milk salt & pepper to taste and you have made gravy Pesonally I like to use a couple of beef bouillion cubes a little kitchen bouquet and a cup and a half of water sometimes I use packet dry gravy mix but it is all personal choice This is an excellent recipe any way

Why would one ruin a perfectly good meal by adding canned mushrooms and canned gravy? Use fresh shrooms and make your gravy out of the broth at the end, for crying out loud. It doesn't take that much more time and it is healthier.

I'm with you Judy Trudy - I never use that canned gravy. That stuff is nasty. Just make your own gravy out of the broth at the end. Use a little flour and I also add beef bouillon or beef broth. Much better !!!!!

Kitchen Bouquet browning and seasoning sauce. You can buy it in any store. When you make pan gravy and its not dark enough, use a half teaspoon and it darkens it up. It's a great product.
