You may ask, "What's a plantain?" Well, it's a fruit that is super popular in the South and in South and Central American cultures, too. I'm sure it will soon win a place at your table...really!

What You'll Need

  • 1/4 cup (½ stick) butter
  • 2 large plantains, peeled and sliced diagonally
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon water

What to Do

  1. In a medium-sized skillet, melt the butter over low heat. Add the plantains and sauté for 8 to 10 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Sprinkle with the salt then add the brown sugar and water and continue cooking until the sugar is dissolved and the plantains are evenly coated. Serve immediately.

Notes

Not to be eaten raw, plantains have the flavor and texture of something like a cross between potatoes and bananas. They're available in the supermarket produce section and are definitely worth checking out.

I have seen plantains in the market before and I never thought to purchase them and find a recipe to use them in. Now I have a recipe so I guess I can pick up a few the next time I am in the market. This sounds simple enough and I love to serve new dishes.

A Haitian friend served plantains at a family dinner. That was the only time that I have had them. Now with this recipe, I can prepare plantains for myself.

To "missmix48" in comment section......a plantain is the "other" bananas you see in the produce section. A little larger, darker green/yellow and firmer; just ask your produce person in the supermarket if you don't see the sign. Good luck, and they are delicious!

I don't even know what a plantain looks like! Where is the picture?
