You may ask, "What's a plantain?" Well, it's a fruit that is super popular in the South and in South and Central American cultures, too. I'm sure it will soon win a place at your table...really!
What You'll Need
- 1/4 cup (½ stick) butter
- 2 large plantains, peeled and sliced diagonally
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoon light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon water
What to Do
- In a medium-sized skillet, melt the butter over low heat. Add the plantains and sauté for 8 to 10 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Sprinkle with the salt then add the brown sugar and water and continue cooking until the sugar is dissolved and the plantains are evenly coated. Serve immediately.
Notes
Not to be eaten raw, plantains have the flavor and texture of something like a cross between potatoes and bananas. They're available in the supermarket produce section and are definitely worth checking out.
