We love combining Italian sausage and ground beef 'cause it gives us a sandwich that's far better than any ordinary meatball sub from a fast sandwich shop. You'll have to make sure you brought your appetite 'cause these hoagies are no small feat. If you're looking for an easy sandwich recipe to prepare and serve up when the weather gets a little gloomy, our recipe for a Hot Meatball Sandwich will certainly brighten your spirits.
What You'll Need
- 1/2 pound spicy Italian sausage, casing removed
- 1/2 pound ground beef
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup Italian-style or flavored dry bread crumbs
- 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 jar (26 ounces) spaghetti sauce
- 1/2 cup water
- 4 hoagie or hero rolls, split
What to Do
- In a large bowl, combine the sausage, ground beef, eggs, bread crumbs, cheese, salt, and pepper; mix well. Form into twelve 1-1/2-inch meatballs.
- Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat and cook the meatballs for 6 to 8 minutes, gently turning occasionally to brown on all sides. Add the spaghetti sauce and water; reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the meatballs are no longer pink, stirring occasionally.
- Place 3 meatballs on each hoagie roll. Spoon sauce evenly over the meatballs and place the remaining sauce in a bowl to serve along with the sandwiches; serve immediately.
