These aren't your ordinary fried green tomatoes. We're talkin' about crispy, crunchy fried slices of green tomatoes - with a nice spicy kick.
What You'll Need
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoon hot pepper sauce
- 5 green tomatoes, cored and cut into 1/4-inch slices (see note)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup self-rising white cornmeal mix
- 1 1/2 cup vegetable oil
What to Do
-
In a large bowl, combine egg and hot pepper sauce; mix well. Add tomato slices and toss to coat well.
-
In a shallow dish, combine flour and cornmeal mix; mix well. Dip each tomato slice into flour mixture, coating completely. Place on a baking sheet until all slices are coated.
-
In a large skillet, heat oil over high heat until hot but not smoking. Fry coated tomatoes a few at a time 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until golden.
- Drain on a paper towel-lined platter. Serve warm.
Notes
Green tomatoes? Sure, they're available in the early summer in most markets, but with their popularity growing all around the country, you can often find them during the rest of the year in specialty and health food markets. Our suggestion is to ask your regular supermarket produce manager for them. Oh...allowing them to sit while the slices are all coated will help the breading stay on. These are great as is or served with a creamy horseradish sauce.
