Honey Garlic Chicken is one of the most popular dishes in Asian restaurants. But why wait 'til you go out to enjoy it? With Chinese takeout recipes this easy, there's no reason to leave the house! You can make your own Honey Garlic Chicken that rivals what you'll get at your neighborhood take-out place...and in less time, too!

What You'll Need

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/3 cup sesame seeds
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

What to Do

  1. In a large bowl, make a batter by combining the flour, baking powder, salt, and water; mix well.

  2. In a large deep skillet, toast the sesame seeds over medium-high heat until golden. Remove from skillet and set aside.

  3. Reduce heat to medium, add 1/4 inch oil to skillet, and heat oil until hot (but not smoking!). Dip chicken pieces in batter, coating completely, then cook in batches for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until golden. Drain on a paper towel-lined platter.

  4. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, warm honey, garlic, and soy sauce over low heat for 4 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Place chicken in a large bowl and pour warm honey sauce over it. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and toss until chicken is well coated. Serve immediately.

This was really good! However, since I try to stay away from as much gluten as possible, I made this without the batter. I cooked the chicken in Sesame Seed oil and then finished the recipe out by adding the honey mixture to the already cooked chicken. It was really good. I substituted the sesame seeds for Chia seeds because I didn't have any sesame.

I am going to try a shortcut and use the already breaded cooked chicken nuggetts from the supermarket. I find that when I try to fry breaded chicken, it always sticks to the pan. I have a glass top stove and the temps are not always even.

Would not recommend this recipe. Left an aftertaste that lasted for quite awhile. Way to many sesame seeds. Very sweet.

Really terrific recipe! Not fans of sesame seeds so left them out. Is very pretty with thinly sliced green onion (green part only) sprinkled on top.

This looks like a great recipe to make on a weeknight!

This was delicious and the other half said it was just as good as in a chinese restaurant. I served it over white rice, but next time will double the sauce. It was timely, but in the end when sitting down to eat it..well, that was quickly forgotten.

1/4 teaspoon of soy sauce? I think yhat mustsurely be a typo. I added 1/4 CUP of soy sauce and it was perfect. Next time I might try adding a Tbsp of vinegar to the sauce. Everybody loved this. I dirtied many dishes preparing it, though.

The taste was excellent....will make it again, but had two issues to note....1) added a bit of water to the batter because it was too thick. 2) Wish I had a splatter screen to fit my skillet. We had oil coating everything within a 2 foot radius of the stove top! After all of this, we sat down to an excellent tasting meal. To the person who had trouble getting the batter to stay on the chicken....be sure that your chicken is patted dry before dipping it in the batter. Batter will not stick if the chicken is wet. The same rule holds true for fish. :D

My family didn't care for it. Found it to be to sweet.

Such a great recipe, I didnt add the sesame seeds because I didnt have any but I loved it, perfection!

Made this last night and it was very tasty. However, i had some trouble getting chicken chunks coated in batter. Seemed to sticky, did igo wrong somewhere wotj the batter?

I found the batter a little too thick when I made it too. I just added a little more water until it was the right consistancy. I turned out great.

This was really delicious. My husband and I both loved it. The honey garlic sauce is really good but we both thought, with the basic chicken recipe, we could try different sauces to change it up from time to time. If I would have had this recipe when my kids were little, they would have never eaten a processed chicken nugget.

My hubby really liked this one. The kids and I thought it was just ok.

Made this tonight - it was delish! Didn't know about changing the tablespoon of baking powder to teaspoon but it still worked. My husband loved it sesame seeds and garlic included - he usually thinks that salt and pepper are exotic spices! Cut the recipe in half since there were just the two of us and served it over rice with vegetables. Have printed it out and also put it in my recipe box. Don't want to lose this one!

Am always on the lookout for 'different' chicken recipes as when my hubby hears "chicken" he gets a pained expression on his face, lol This looks really delicious and will try soon!

This a very delicious recipe! It's a keeper!!

can you using baking soda instead of baking powder?

You should not use baking soda instead of baking powder. These ingredients are not interchangeable. Thank you for your question!

Which is correct? 1 1/2 t or 1 1/2 T of baking powder. Mr. Food said teaspoons, but recipe says tablespoons.

Thank you for catching that! The correct amount it 1-1/2 teaspoons and we have updated the recipe above to reflect the correct amount. Thanks again and enjoy!

So Good !!!!! Another Happy Hubby Recipe : ) and so easy and quick to make.

JaneAnn60, I made this without the sesame seeds & the whole family loved it!

I lubbock anything with garlic! GOOD 4 U also.

Has Anyone tried this recipe leaving out the Sesame seeds...my kids hate them.

There wouldn't be any problem with leaving out the sesame seeds.

What about frying is Sesame oil?

Wonderful and easy dish the comment from my husband was wow do this again the only thing as other people have commented is use more water for the batter it to stiff as the amont in the recipe

I had to add more water to get a "batter". It tasted ok but I dont think I will be making it again.

it sound delicious i will try it.

In regards to the posting. I looked at the recipe and it called for 3/4 cup of water. lmsharon said she used 1/4 cup of water. That is probably what caused the dough to be "like a ball of bread dough!" The recipe sounds delicious and I plan to try it. Happy cooking to all...
