Down in the South they're famous for classic potluck dishes, like fried chicken and coleslaw. Our recipe for Southern Slaw is a lightened-up version of the way many Southern folks make their traditional coleslaw recipes at home.
What You'll Need
- 1 medium-sized head green cabbage, shredded
- 2 medium-sized carrots, peeled and shredded
- 1/2 red bell pepper, chopped
- 2 tablespoons diced red onion
- 1 cup light mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons white vinegar
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 tablespoon white pepper
What to Do
- In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, carrots, bell pepper, and onion; mix well and set aside.
- In a small bowl, combine the remaining ingredients; mix well. Pour over the cabbage mixture; toss to coat well. Cover and chill for at least one hour or until ready to serve.
Note
- Sure, you can use two 10-ounce packages of shredded cabbage and carrot mixture instead of shredding the cabbage and carrots yourself.

I like this and it is great to put right on top of pulled pork. I use sherry vinegar (not cooking sherry) and it has a bit more flavor.

We are senior seniors so we roughly grate our cabbage and carrots... Its an excellent cole slaw especially to take to a group gathering.

Love your videos however I FIND IT DISRUPTIVE HAVING PEOPLE MOVING IN THE BACKGROUND! It "upstages" the demonstration . Keep the emphasis and attention on your demonstration and curtail the action in the background!!

I AM Southern to the core.. I love this recipe!!! and I am sooooo picky! I hosted a group of college students in my home to help them with a project that they were working on... I made this slaw and Pork roast BBQ that cooked for literally two days! I was certain that the BBQ would be the hit of the dinner.. But it was the coleslaw.. They all asked for the recipe. I told them it was an old friends recipe and I could not give it away.. out of all of my go to recipes, this is the one I always use for a southern dinner! Thank you Mr. Food!

It wasn't very nice of you not wanting to share a recipe with someone who liked your dish. You should have been very flattered and gladly shared it. You're definately not a 'saint', Tonya.

I think this is a great recipe for Southern Slaw. For those not wanting the creamy slaw try your good old favorite German slaw. It s a vinegar based dressing.

For years I heard my Dad tell Mom he like her slaw, but not the mayo in it. When I had a kitchen of my own, I started trying it differently, cuz I don't like it "creamy" either. Dad and I like it with the cabbage and some carrot grated coarsly - and dressed with apple cider vinegar and just a tad of sugar. But one day I made the slaw and added grated brocolli and some red cabbage with the green and dressed it with the Italian Dressing you make from the packet and now that's how we put it on the table.

Hi, I am not a big fan of too much mayo in slaw either.. vinegar is so good and your recpe sounds so delicious. We love cabbage, as i am from German descent, My Grandmother would boil, bake, fry it you name it. But it is much better with veggies and vinegar spices

i like the sugar and vinegar.. growing up making it without sugar always felt something was missing. even in potato salad i like the same a bit of sugar for NY style, chopped peppers, tomatoes and minced onion some parsley and thats it.

Being from the South, and most all my life...I feel this version of your slaw here is a disgrace to the more traditional Southern Slaw. I realize, even the Southern version has many different makeups/style. I was raised with momma, making slaw that was hand grated, or sliced thinly with a sharp knife (my preference). With that, she would add the Mayo, diced fresh tomato, salt & pepper to taste. Plain & simple, and MORE traditional to Southern Slaw! No need to put all that other garbage in it! JMO JOHN

Mama's Slaw was nothing more than a medium head cabbage grated fine with a hand grater and 1 large carrot grated fine then adding mayonnaise, a pinch of sugar, a tablespoon of vinegar and salt and pepper to taste. It was the best slaw I've ever tasted and I make mine the same way. Well except I use the food processor instead of hand gratting!
