Maple French Toast Sticks
- SERVES
- 8
- COOK TIME
- 15 Min
French toast typically means sticky hands and mouths (and lots of napkins!), but with our recipe for Maple French Toast Sticks you don't have to worry about that 'cause the flavorings and the rich maple syrup are already cooked in!
What You'll Need
- 4 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup confectioners' sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 8 hot dog rolls, cut in half lengthwise
- 3 tablespoons butter
What to Do
- In a shallow dish, beat eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla, confectioners' sugar, and cinnamon until well blended. Dip hot dog roll halves into egg mixture, coating completely.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter. Cook rolls a few at a time 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until golden, adding more butter as needed.
- Serve immediately or allow to cool, then cover and chill until ready to serve. Reheat in a preheated 250 degree oven 3 to 5 minutes, or until heated through.
Note
- This is just the thing to make the night before serving, so the next morning you can simply reheat it in the oven or toaster oven (not the microwave) for a hot breakfast treat in no time.

Is it really necessary for the one cup of powdered sugar, being that the maple syrup is already sweet. I'm a diabetic and would love to try this without all the sugar content. Such a clever idea with the hot dog buns and sounds very tasty.

Hi there! No, the powdered sugar is not required for this recipe and can definitely be eliminated. Enjoy!

Thanks for the quick answer, Test Kitchen. Give yourself a pat on the back!!! Made this the next morning and I don't believe we will ever have bread french toast again. Still curious as to why the powdered sugar. Does it make it more crispy through caramalzation or is it for more sweetness. I'm thinking about making it the next time we have the Grandchildren, just to see the difference. But now that I think about it, having 4 sugar rushed Grandchildren might be a handful. Thanks again!!!!

The purpose of the powdered sugar in this recipe is to sweeten the batter. Let us know how you like this!

I made this tonight and the family loved it. It would be great if there were nutritional values added to the recipes.

Oh what great imaginations they have in the test kitchen ! A sweet treat to use your left over hot dog buns .... other than using them to make garlic toast !

I think they have a great imagination too. I use hot dog buns for pizza boats love them that way. You take hot dog buns, pizza sauce, then hamburger, pepperoni, or what ever meat you have on hand, then pizza cheese on top, then bake them at 375 degrees. And yummmm.
