We like to create different flavors by adding extras like chopped peppers, sliced mushrooms, canned fried onions, or crumbled bacon. Then it's like having something a little bit different every time, but with the same ease.
What You'll Need
- 8 slices white bread, crusts removed
- 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
- 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Swiss cheese
- 3 eggs
- 1 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- Pinch cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
What to Do
-
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Coat an 8-inch square baking dish with cooking spray.
-
Lightly toast bread. Place 4 slices in bottom of prepared baking dish. Sprinkle half Cheddar and half Swiss cheeses evenly over bread. Lay remaining bread slices over cheese; top with remaining shredded cheeses.
-
In a large bowl, beat eggs and milk together until well mixed; add seasonings and beat just to mix. Pour mixture over bread and cheese; let sit 15 to 20 minutes.
-
Bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until set.
Notes
After baking 30 minutes, you may want to remove strata from oven, top with your favorite "extra," and bake an additional 10 minutes.

Made this for breakfast this morning. Made exactly according to recipe with the cayenne. Perfect for two hungry morning appetites, although we did have one piece left over. Served with a ham slice. Delish!
