Skillet Sausage 'n' Cabbage

This cabbage recipe is the perfect fill-you-up one-pot meal option for chilly autumn and winter evenings. Even the pickiest members of your family won't be able to resist this classic.
The hearty combination of cabbage and sausage will keep you warm and satisfied, which is one of the reasons people love cabbage and sausage dinner recipes in the winter. Oh, it's so comforting!
What You'll Need
- 1 (14-ounce) package kielbasa sausage, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, cut into thin strips
- 6 cups coarsely chopped cabbage
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Sausage 'n' Cabbage Skillet Directions:
- In a large skillet that has been coated with cooking spray, saute kielbasa over medium heat 3 to 5 minutes or until browned. Remove to a plate.
- In the same skillet, heat oil until hot; saute onion and bell pepper 5 minutes.
- Add cabbage and cook 8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add sausage, broth, and remaining ingredients.
- Reduce heat to medium-low and cook 5 minutes or until cabbage is tender. Serve immediately.

One of my Favorite Mr. Food Recipes Sooo Easy! Last time I used a famous brand "1/2 the fat" Smoked Turkey Sausage, Skinless" . Made it even quicker when you don't have time.

Wonderful. I cooked the Kielbasa to a brown then did the rest of the recipe. I need to do 2 kielbasa next time because hands kept stealing it.

This was easy to make and I found it very tasty. Make sure to use all the cabbage because it is really reduced while cooking.

This is already a low carb recipe, but using turkey kielbasa would make it even more healthy. I really cannot tell the difference in the turkey or regular kielbasa, but I can with ground turkey and do not like it. This is something our whole family would like and I am pretty sure I have everything on hand to make it. I am thinking this looks like tonight's dinner. After a full day of black Friday shopping, I really needed something good AND easy!

The caraway seeds area must to give this dish it's wonderful flavor! If you'd like a milder cabbage or are trying to convince your family to eat cabbage, you could try napa cabbage.

absolutely yummy, filling and tummy comfort food. I used the wine instead of broth and it is great. And the caraway seeds give the added benefit of reducing the gassiness that comes with cabbage and onions.

I haven't made this yet but I will. I will be subbing Turkey Kielbasi because my family doesn't eat regular kielbasi. I have done many times a dish similar to this-all one -pan and I use Turkey Smoked sausage,Sauerkraut, onions sauted in butter and spicy mustard to taste . After you saut the onions then everything else goes into the pan to simmer for about 20-25 minutes.

Hello :) The Test Kitchen recommends substituting wide egg noodles in place of cabbage. You should cook the noodles separately, prepare the skillet accordingly (without cabbage), and then add the cooked noodles into the skillet.

I make a dish using the kielbasi sausage with peppers onions cut up in large pieces. This is flavorful by itself but you can add a little soy sauce. This is served over rice if preferred.

I make my fam a dish called "Hoffenpopper" its fried diced potatoes, add diced onions add diced bell pepper. I top it with a little shredded mild cheddar.

My wife made this because she had some left-over cabbage. It is now in my top 10 favorite dishes. Add a little Cajun seasoning if you like a little kick. 5 Stars!

This is a delicious dish and quite healthy. Just made it yesterday. My method of making it differs a bit. In order to cut some of the fat content in the sausage I put the whole link in the skillet. With a fork puncture the casing several times. This allows fat to escape. Add water to about half way up on the sausage. Cover, cook on Medium 30-45 minutes. Defat the remaining liquid. I use 1 cup of the liquid in the skillet. (If too much remains, I boil it down a bit. If not quite a cup, I add some water.) Then added a rounded teaspoon of Chicken Base to the flavored sausage water. Then add all the veges and top with sausage, sliced as desired. Cover and cook until done. Such a flavorful and yummy dish. Love the caraway seed! Used almost 2 teaspoons of that.

Great dish! Loved the flavor. I used turkey kielbasa but the "12-oz" package was not enough. I used wine but also added cup chicken broth. Next time I may try the potatoes and/or carrots as others suggested. Even my 4-year old grandson loved it. :-)

THIS is comfort food! Just be sure and let the cabbage steam for at least 1/2 hour unless you want it crispy.

Had this for supper last night. Used red cabbage; didn't have any green cabbage in the fridge. Cooked the sausage until well browned, used half-and-half white wine and chix broth. Excellent, for a pair of cabbage-lovers! Would have benefited from a touch of added garlic, since I was using ordinary smoked sausage rather than Kielbasa.

Try adding a package of Kluski noodles (cooked) instead of the potatoes. It's excellent.

SUPER good!!! Added 12 oz. cubed russet potatoes and 8 oz. baby carrots to the onion/bell pepper sauteeing step. Mine didn't need anywhere near the 1/2 tsp. of salt, and I used 1/2 c. of wine and 1/2 cup of unsalted chicken stock. GOOD GOOD RECIPE!!!

Oh yeah, no caraway seeds either. I don't like them anyway. I also agree that potatoes & carrots with a little more broth would be awesome. And we are a cheese family so that little bit was good, but wouldn't want to drown out that good flavor with it either. This is absolutely a keeper!

This was very good but my husband & I felt that it wasn't very filling. Next time I will add some carrots & potatoes as ladyoflight suggested.

No seeds, add half cup salsa, smoked sausage, some butter, diced potatoes, slice cabbage, pinch of granulated garlic, fresh ground pepper, one skillet meal.

I made this dish tonight and my husband and I really enjoyed it. It was delicious. We put rice on the side and it set the dinner off. Thank you for another great recipe. The chicken broth I used was College Inn (has chablis wine and some herbs and you can buy this broth at Publix $1.67).

I made a very similar dish, but I omit the bell pepper add noodles to the cabbage and kielbasa. Cook the noodles first. Caraway seeds are optional - Kielbasa has enough flavor to carry the dish.

Get a book such as Netaer's "The Complete Book of Food Counts" and and figure out the nutritional info based on exactly how much of what you use and divide totals by number of servings .

I've been making something similar to this for many, many years. I cut carrots into about 2" chunks, potatoes cut in 8ths, with about two " of water in a wide, large pan. When these are partially cooked, I add the wedges of cabbage, onion in separated rings, cayenne pepper, & black pepper. When cabbage is partially cooked, I add the keilbasa cut into 2" or 3" chunks. Keep a lid on during the cooking process except when adding ingredients. One of our favorite meals.
