You won't hear "Hamburgers again?!" from your family when you serve up this big burger that everybody can share. Instead, you'll hear, "Can you make that fun burger again, Mom?!"
What You'll Need
- 1 1/2 pound lean ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 pound Cheddar cheese, sliced
- 4 iceberg or romaine lettuce leaves
- 1 (8-inch) round loaf Italian or white bread, cut horizontally in half
What to Do
-
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Coat a 9-inch pie plate with cooking spray.
-
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, onion, salt, and pepper; mix well and form into a large hamburger patty. Place in pie plate and bake 30 minutes.
-
Remove from oven and top with cheese slices. Return to oven and bake 5 to 8 minutes, or until no pink remains in ground beef and cheese is melted.
-
Place lettuce leaves over bottom half of bread, then top with burger. Replace top of bread, cut into wedges, and serve.
Notes
Before cutting it into wedges, you can top this with your favorite condiments like ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, or pickles- or, if everybody likes something different, serve the toppers on the side. We can pack more vitamins and nutrients into our diets by using darker-colored lettuces. Instead of making sandwiches and salads with iceberg, try romaine or other leafy green varieties.

I used to make a similar recipe for my then-husband, his favorite dish. Split the hamburger in two, add onions, tomatoes and cheese to the middle of the bottom one, top with second half, seal and bake. This makes a delicious surprise when it's cut into. It's really fabulous if you make your 'bun' out of bread dough.
