These little bundles are perfect for combining yesterday's flavors with today's shortcuts! Make 'em the night before, and you'll look forward to that home-cooked taste all day long!
What You'll Need
- 1 head cabbage, cored
- 5 cups water
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided
- 1 1/2 pound ground beef
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1/2 cup plain bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup chili sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 (12-ounce) jar beef gravy
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
What to Do
- In a large pot, combine head of cabbage, water, and 1 teaspoon salt. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat. Allow to boil for 12 to 15 minutes, or until tender; drain and set aside.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, green pepper, onion, bread crumbs, chili sauce, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, and black pepper; mix well.
- Carefully remove 12 to 18 cabbage leaves, depending on size; reserve remaining cabbage for another use. Divide ground beef mixture equally over center of each cabbage leaf. Using your hands and starting at core end, make rolls about 1 x 2-1/2 inches, folding over sides and rolling loosely. Place rolls seam-side down in prepared baking dish.
- In a medium bowl, combine gravy, sour cream, and brown sugar; mix well. Pour gravy mixture evenly over cabbage rolls. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.
- Remove aluminum foil and bake 10 to 15 more minutes, or until beef is no longer pink and cabbage is very tender. Allow to stand for 5 minutes, then serve.

This looks like something I would like to make, but before I make anything I need to look at the nutrition values. Because there are health situations in my family, I would love to know where to find the nutrition values. Please let me know - thank you!

Love cabbage rolls a little work but so worth it my Grandma came from Poland she always used rice onion and garlic mixed with 1/2 ground pork ( I use a tube of breakfast sausage) and 1/2 ground beef a large can of tomatoes cut up a tablespoon white sugar a Tablesppon lemon juice may be add to tomatoes salt pepper to taste put extra leaves over top of rolls them cover with tomatoes we never add green peppers or chili sauce to our cabbage rolls but the brown gravy and sour cream addition does sound interesting I think the addition of 1/2 cup brown sugar plus the chili sauce may make this dish too for my family too sweet

I am of Polish decent and make it a point to prepare this dish once a month in the winter. We don't use gravey and we add rice to our burger mixture along with bread soaked in milk and squeezed. S and P and garlic is mixed in. Roll it, secure it with a toothpick and lay them on a bed of cabbage leaves at the bottom of your roaster. Squish up a can of San Marsano tomatoes and a half can of water, cover with more leaves and bake. Always moist and juicy. I serve a side salad and a warm loaf of crusty bread to mop up the lovely juice. So nice and comforting.

If you freeze your cabbage ahead it is easier to work with. Let it thaw in a strainer while you mix your meat. No hard cores and rolls much earier

I've always used ground ham, like from a baked ham ... i mean what is more natural than ham and cabbage ... mix it w/rice, sauteed onion ... tomatoes and tomato sauce ... yummy I've tried the ground beef and just does not work for me

In our polish house we omit the chili sauce, gravy. use whole tomatoes in the can (if you want more sauce use 2 cans) , dice them up and pour them over the top of the dish, also, add rice and tore up bread much better than bread crumbs lol hope it helps..Happy New Year everyone

I have made the stuffed cabbage rolls & used meatloaf & then rolled them up. I used the remaining cabbage on bottom of roaster pan, then put cabbage rolls on top. Then I put sauerkraut (canned) over the top & then I use can of tomato soup/water & pour over the top.All in 1 pot into the oven. Family likes it with mashed potatoes.

Looks good but where is the rice? Every recipe I ever saw or made had rice in cabbage rolls.

I also had it will rice in the past. So add 1-2 cups of precooked rice to this recipe and add a little more liquid. Infact if you enjoy this recipe, but do not have the time to accomplish the task, then add all the ingredients into a pot and make a soup/stew instead.
