What You'll Need
- 1 pound smoked sausage, cut in half lengthwise, then cut crosswise into 1/2-inch slices

- 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) stewed tomatoes
- 1 package (10 ounces) frozen cut okra, thawed and drained
- 2 teaspoons dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 cup uncooked long- or whole-grain rice
- 1/4 cup dry red wine
- 1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce
What to Do
- In a 6-quart soup pot, combine the sausage, water, tomatoes, okra, thyme, and garlic powder. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low.
- Add the remaining ingredients and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the rice is tender, stirring occasionally.

This was good, but I just had to add a bag of frozen mixed vegetables to it. I like soup, but my son in law doesn't, so I have to pack my soups with lots of stuff and give him some toasted garlic bread to sop up the broth when he's done. Otherwise, I scold him for wasting the delicious broth! I love him anyway. lol (Is there no option to upload photos of the recipes from here I make?)

I think I will use this and add chicken and a can of gravy for chicken gumbo! Thanks!

I love gumbo, but please tell me I can prepare this recipe WITHOUT the okra. I was forced to eat it when I was a child and I can't stand the smell, taste, texture of it. Does anyone have a substitute for it!! The receipe sounds very tasty, especially adding the shrimp. Freda Brittain

This is the best Gumbo Recipe I have tried. I always add the Shrimp for the more authentic look and taste. It is really easy to make and yummy too.
