Do ya think your furry friend feels left out when you cook for everyone else but him? Why not make a batch of these Doggie Bone Treats? It's just one way to show some TLC.
What You'll Need
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole-wheat flour
- 1/2 cup wheat germ
- 1/2 cup powdered milk
- 3 tablespoons vegetable shortening
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup water
- 1 teaspoon green food color
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon chopped fresh mint, optional
What to Do
- Preheat the oven to 350 degree F. Coat a rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, combine both flours, the wheat germ, powdered milk, shortening, brown sugar, and salt; mix until crumbly.
- In a small bowl, combine the water and food color; mix well. Add to the flour mixture, along with the egg and mint; mix well.
- On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough until smooth. Using a rolling pin, roll to a 1/2-inch thickness. Using a wreath- or dog bone-shaped cookie cutter or a knife, cut out biscuits.
- Place the biscuits on the rimmed baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until browned around the edges. Remove to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Makes about 1 dozen treats.
Notes
Before making these, make sure you're aware of any possible allergies your dog may have to wheat, eggs, or dairy products.
