Grits are a staple in southern cuisine, and with good reason! I think that everyone should learn how to make them! I've seen TV chefs make them several times, but with all the constant stirring and the risk of burning them, I was always a little bit intimidated to try them myself. These are so rich and creamy. I love to serve them for breakfast with some skillet fried pork sausage patties, but for those watching the calories, a ham steak would be great too!

This recipe fails to state that they are using quick-cooking grits (aka 5-minute grits). Regular grits take 20 minutes. jkschmid 5867446 - just eliminate the cheese! The grits are not make any different with or without the cheese :) If you want really thin grits, like "Cracker Barrell" serves, you'll want to increase your liquid a bit; they thicken quickly!

Milk with grits?!?!?!!! We're "talking" about grits here, not cream of wheat. All one has to do is just add cheese after the grits, stir until the cheese melted, serve on plate or in a bowl, add just a tad more butter & some salt & pepper. We're talking real good, downhome SOUTHERN grits.... Sheesh. lol - cllM

This is great, and if you have any left over it's even great to fry it the next morning. All you do is slice the cold left over grits into one inch slices. In a frying pan melt 2 tsp. of butter on medium add the slices and heat on each side about 2 min. Its even awesome topped with maple syrup!
