I think I must have missed the answer to the question about using fresh apples. I really would prefer using fresh. Thanks.

Unfortunately, in this recipe, fresh apples cannot be used since you'll need the gooey sauce from the can to mix the cake. If you'd like to make an apple cake with fresh apples, we recommend checking out our recipes for: Apple Pudding, Easy Apple Cake, or No Bother Apple Cake.

I make this using a caramel cake mix and apple pie filling I canned this fall. It's a light, moist cake that's excellent!

I love this recipe. However I also love butter. I melt a stick of butter in a 9x13 pan and set aside. I add cinnamon and nutmeg to the mix along with 1/2 C of raisins and 1/2 C dried cranberries. Pour into the pan with the melted butter. Shake a cinnamon and sugar mixture all over the top of the cake and then bake. The cinnamon and sugar makes a nice crunchy top, no frosting needed.

I've been making these cake since I first bought my Mr. Food cookbook 2 decades ago - I've always loved it best with butter cake mix (less sweet yet richer tasting) or butter pecan cake mix, when I can find it. I also like to make a quick streusel topping for it, or if I'm short on time I just top it with 1 cup of chopped walnuts that have been mixed with a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Yum, yum, yum!

I am wondering if there is any way I can make this with fresh apples instead of apple pie filling???

Trying to figure out if you would add all ingredients that the cake mix calls for, along with the others, or just the mix itself, with the apples and eggs...??? Directions aren't too explanatory on this one. Just want to know before deciding which Johnny Appleseed recipe to try for the first time... Any suggestions??

In this recipe, the only ingredients you add are the cake mix, apple pie filling and 4 eggs. That's it! Enjoy!

I live in Central PA. Will be making this cake today but as with many recipes on this website, I cannot find the same size box/jar/container, etc. that some of the recipes call for. This recipe was an example as I could not find an 18.25 oz. box of any cake mix. Largest I could find was 16.5. Hoping it will turn out!!

We have found that those extra couple of ounces do not effect the outcome of the recipe. Enjoy!

cken, you just use the cake mix, pie filling and eggs. No need for the extra oil and water required on the package instructions.

For years I have used devil's food cake and cherry pie filling. I have also used spice cake with the apple fie filling. It is so easy to make something fast, simple and great tasting.

Do you make the cake mix according to the recipe on the box and THEN add the extra or do you just use dry cake mix and the pie filling and eggs?
