I would like to save this to my recipe box, but it won't do anything. Always have a hard time doing this.

Not sure why Texas gets credit for this recipe, something similar has been around for a long time all over the country. Good side dish as your published it. Make it a meal by adding cooked chicken chunks. I like some crumbled butter crackers on top.

Lived in south Texas for years....a mainstay for my family. I did, however, use one regular size jar of Velveeta rather than the cheddar. It is a meal in itself.

Is there any way to cut down on the amount of butter used? Would a little extra liquid work? An entire stick of butter is a lot.

Yes, indeed. Use only the amount of butter you need to successfully saute the celery and onions, maybe 2-4T. There should be no real problem in the overall recipe, just less fat.

I have used a similar recipe for years. I add cooked chicken, mushrooms, and sliced water chestnuts. I have never used chicken broth, just mushroom or chicken soup

This is the recipe my family has used for years - and it is perfect every time. Makes excellent leftovers - IF you have any!
