These Cheese Straws are a favorite 'cause they're easy to make and tasty as can be. They're just as great for snack time as they are for dipping into a bowl of soup or chili.
What You'll Need
- 2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
- 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
What to Do
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Coat rimmed baking sheets with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Using your hands, knead well until a soft dough forms.
- Roll dough out on a lightly floured surface to a 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into 1/2- x 3- inch strips; place on baking sheets.
- Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden. Serve warm or allow to cool completely, then place in an airtight container until ready to serve.

I followed the recipe exactly and could hardly work the dough and get it to stick together. When I attempted to roll it out, the dough started breaking into little pieces. I finally got a few strips cut and baked them, but did not like the taste. Thought they were very bland.

My recipe is similar. I use a cookie press to make long star shaped pieces. Makes a lot, they freeze well, if there is any left. Recipe is 3 sticks salted butter, 1 pound block of sharp cheddar cheese, grated, 1/4 teaspoon of ground red pepper. 4 cups of all purpose flour. Beat the butter, cheese and red pepper. Gradually add the flour til combined. Squirt out with a cookie press with the star shaped disc. Make long pieces. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.

I can't wait to make these! I think the kids in my home daycare will love these cheese straws! These are not too spicy for them either, but you can adjust the red pepper flakes to taste. Red pepper flakes add flavor before the heat gets you! lol

I love these and sometimes make a small ball and mash with a fork and make wafers...and they are 'so good'

I really enjoyed these cheese straws. They were a bit crumbly, but that didn't affect the taste at all. I'd eat them again, and again.

These are basically homemade Cheez-Its! They're awesome, and like "SpicyGirl" said, it's hard to stop at just a couple of them.

This is a wonderful recipe, been using this since the 60's. It's addictive! I place the dough in my cookie press which makes for very pretty cheese straws.
