Enjoy our easy version of the creamy Spanish custard dessert known as flan that's the perfect sweet ending to a fancy company meal or even a weeknight meal with the family.
What You'll Need
- 3/4 cup sugar, divided
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups milk
What to Do
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
-
In a small nonstick skillet, stir 1/2 cup sugar over medium heat until completely melted and caramel-colored, about 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Immediately pour melted sugar into a 9-inch glass pie plate, coating bottom of plate. (Be careful when working with heated sugar; it is very hot.)
-
In a medium bowl, beat eggs with vanilla. In a small bowl, combine milk with remaining sugar then beat into egg mixture. Pour over caramelized sugar then place pie plate into a pan of hot water, with just enough water to go about halfway up sides of plate.
-
Bake 40 minutes, or until a knife inserted into center comes out clean. Let cool 20 minutes then cover and chill 1 hour, or until ready to serve. Right before serving, invert custard onto a 10- or 12-inch rimmed serving plate so caramel sauce doesn’t run off plate.
Notes
This creamy Spanish dessert works after any meal, so how 'bout trying it after a dinner of Old World Spanish Chicken?

My daughter lives in Spain. I've enjoyed FLAN often over there. That's why I am so happy to find this easy recipe to make it! Faith
