Our number one requested apple pie recipe, this Upside Down Apple Pie is bound to be a new fall favorite at your house, especially when you serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

So, what exactly is an upside down apple pie? The idea is that you add a layer of pecans, brown sugar, and butter to the bottom of your pie dish before assembling the rest of your apple pie. Then, when the pie is cooked, you turn it out upside-down onto a plate so that you get a pie topped with delicious, gooey brown sugar topping. Plus, the bottom crust of your apple pie is crisp and perfectly baked. It's a truly delicious innovation, and we are happy to share it with you!

Enjoy this delicious upside-down apple pecan pie for your next holiday dinner. We think everyone at your house will be begging you for the recipe.

What You'll Need

  • 6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) butter, melted, divided
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 (15-ounce) package refrigerated rolled pie crusts
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 5 large Granny Smith or other firm apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch wedges

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Coat a deep-dish pie plate with cooking spray and line it with wax paper. Coat wax paper with cooking spray.

  2. In a small bowl, combine 4 tablespoons butter, the brown sugar, and pecans; mix well and spread evenly over bottom of pie plate. Unroll 1 pie crust and place it in pie plate, pressing crust firmly against nut mixture and sides of pie plate; set aside.

  3. In a large bowl, combine granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and remaining butter; mix well. Add apples and toss gently to coat. Spoon into pie crust.

  4. Unroll second pie crust and place over apple mixture. Trim and fold edges together to seal. Using a knife, cut four 1-inch slits in top crust.

  5. Bake 1 to 1-1/4 hours, or until crust is golden (see Notes). Carefully loosen wax paper around rim and invert pie onto a serving plate while still hot. Remove wax paper and allow to cool slightly; slice into wedges and serve warm, or allow to cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • To make sure you don't have to do any oven cleanup, position a baking sheet on the bottom oven rack to catch any juices that may leak from the pie while it's baking.

Best apple pie ever! Hardest part was peeling, coring and cutting the apples. Be sure to turn over and plate before it caramelizes. Delicious!!

This Upside Down Apple Pie was delicious!!! I will never make any other after this. Comes out beautiful and so so good!!! Thanks for the recipe!

I purchased Granny Smith Apples to make this upsidedown pie and was pleased with the results. I unveiled the beautiful pie at my families Thanksgiving dinner two years ago. Funny thing that happened was one of my grown nephews that never bakes brought the same Apple Upsidedown pie. We laughed and, of course, enjoyed both pies. Thanks for a great recipe. This is definitely 5 stars.

family loved it

Sounds very good delicious!

I made this for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it. If you follow directions exactly, it comes out perfectly!

Thank you for your response concerning my "save" problem. The "Save recipe box" was not an option on the listings. The only options were "Print", "Notes" and "Rate and Comment". I had this problem with a few other recipes. Today, the "Save to recipe box" is a listed option. I can now save the Upside Down Apple Pie recipe. Maybe my computer was having issues. Thank you for all the delicious recipes!

Hi Mahalia! We're glad that the "Save to Recipe Box" option is now available to you. Like we said, we recommend double-checking that you're logged in if it's not showing. We're so happy to hear that you love our recipes as much as we do. Bon appetit!

I noticed the "save" option for recipes is not available. Is this a temporary problem or are followers no longer able to save recipes to their recipe box? Thank you

Hi there Mahalia! Can you let us know where you are looking for the save option? You can click on the "Save to Recipe Box" link that is to the right of the recipe. Also, we recommend double checking that you're logged in. Thanks!

Yum! I've got to try this. Especially with a scoop of ice cream after a big dinner.

This is awesome and easy!

Can canned apples be used? I've already bought them...

Unfortunately, we do not recommend using canned apples for this pie recipe because it needs to cook for over an hour and the canned apples will likely turn mushy. But, those canned apples don't have to go to waste - you can use them to make our delicious Apple Strudel!

I need to know how to use dry apples in place of fresh apples.

Unfortunately, we do not recommend substituting dry apples in place of the fresh apples in this recipe.

The best apple pie ever. Since the first time I made this, it's the only apple pie I make.

I made this pie the other day and my family loved it. It actually tasted better the second day.

I first made this pie when I watched Mr. Food in 2002. It is by far THE best apple pie I've ever made! Everyone that's ever tasted it raves over it. I'm teaching my step-daughter how to cook, and passing along her favorite recipes of mine that she loved as a little girl. This pie is a treasure and I encourage every cook to try this recipe just once.

Thank you for your nice comment, Anne! We love to hear that our recipes are family favorites. Have a wonderful day!

I have been making this upisde down apple pie for several years now. It's always a big hit! Depending on the apples (harder rather than softer) I may end up baking a little longer, but a poke with a fork gives you a good feeling for when the apples are tender. I found after removing it from the oven I must immediately invert the pie on a plate and remove the wax paper or I lose much of my carmel topping. We too like to add extra pecans. Keeps well in the fridge for a few days and you can easily warm up in the microwave for 15 -20 seconds. Thank you so much for sharing this great recipe.

I made this pie and was greatly disappointed. I followed the directions and it turned out bad. I cooked it for about 1 1/4 hours. The top crust never turned golden, as stated, it was a beige color. The juices over flowed and burnt in my oven. I waited a while before removing it from the pie plate. The wax paper stuck, the edges turned to hard caramel and the center did not cook. The pecan topping turned out hard and caramelized . Again, I like trying your recipes, but not this one! I think two cans of apple pie filling might work with less cook time. Fresh apples are very expensive (Granny Smith).

It would help if you followed the instructions

I haven't made this but when apples come back in season I will be trying to make it for sure I love apple pie and this one looks delicious thanks for Sharing ...

Wonderful!!! We added more pecans as my husband LOVES them!!

Fantastic Pie, we love it. My husband saw this on TV and wanted to make it. He has made it several times and it is SOOOOOOO GOOD!

I made this twice. Both times for a dessert contest. I won First Place both times!!!

That's great - Congratulations! :)

Made this for Bridge group this afternoon and it was a big hit.

how do I get upside apple pie recipe without getting all of my personal info thanks there are no children under 18 in this house peggy bryant

I am in love with the "Apple UpSideDown Pie" but would like to make it in mini pies for a large crowd using the mini cupcake pans. Does anyone have suggestions on this conversion?

I made pie this for Thanksgiving and it turned out great. I will make it again but I will use a bigger pie pan. This recipe will be my go-to-pie recipe. A little bit of work, but well worth it

This is AMAZING!!!!! I made mine in a 9x9 instead of a pie pan. My husband claims it is the best apple pie he has ever eaten.

I had a little trouble with my pie crust and I didn't have a deep dish pie plate, but made it a 2nd time yesterday using a casserole dish and it came out great! Will make it again and again!

Thank you thank you!! I haven't made a pie in years and this one was gone the same day!!..It looked as beautiful as yours did on the website o) I do have to say it was easy peasy for me!!...

Can you freeze this pie before baking? I would like to make it a day ahead and bake it the next day. Thanks

Hi Terry! We do not recommend freezing the pie before baking since the sugar that is on the bottom of the pan will dissolve. You can make this a day or two before serving it, but make sure to remove it from the pie plate and remove the wax paper before it cools completely. Enjoy!

What size pie pan should be used?

A 9" deep dish will do the trick. After you make it, we'd love it you could share how much everyone liked it with us on our Facebook page! (If you've got a photo, we'll share that, too!)

I just love this site cooks like homefood and family brags on my rescipees thank you for such rememberble and easy cooking..GOD BLESS sara b. from shelbyville, tenn.

Have made this many times. Personally,I found that parchment paper works much better than the waxed paper. Great pie!!

Worth the work. Very good, everyone raved over this dessert.

My husband loved this. A little time consuming but the end product was good. Sweet so you don't need a very big piece. My husband however had to have two pieces because as he said I made him wait all week before I could make it.

this has my attention and I intend to try it!

Just made this today and it is so so so good!!! This recipe has found a permanent home in my recipe box!!!

First time try, disappointed. Followed directions to the "T" and watched the video and read all the reviews too ! About half of the outer edge of the pecan layer was burnt, 375 oven to hot ? Cut out the few decent edible slices, not my favorite.... sorry. Maybe I'll try it again someday, right now, there are many others on the OOH it's so good list to try !

Ovens have hot spots. Turn it around about half way through cooking.

Every time I make this special pie I get raves!

Verrry good!!!

This may be my new best apple pie recipe.

Made this recipe last night and the family loved it. Had one piece left to share with my boss and he said it was the best apple pie ever. I love to bake but had never tried a apple pie. Very easy and delicious .

I LOVE this site for recipes..thanks a lot! However, why must we put up with that moving square ad that keeps floating across the page as I'm trying to decide whether to print out the recipe o not? VERY annoying! Why not run it up the side of the page? Can you help us on this? thanks again!

Thanks for the video instuction with this pie. It helps with the the simplicity and assembly of the recipe. The videos really do make the recipes more simple.

My daughter in law likes to make apple pies. She always makes them to take to holiday gatherings with her friends. I plan to make this and take it to Delaware when I go for a visit. I want her to ask me for "my" apple pie recipe. Of course I will give Mr. Food the credit- after i give the recipe. Love all the Mr Food recipes.

I plan to make this pie and drizzle caramel over top. Apple pie or any dessert made with apples, brown sugar, and crust, is my favorite. Thank you Mr. Food for all the creative delicious recipes.

where's the ice cream topping???? :) this would be good if topped with a peanutbutter/coolwhip combination for the topping. Will have to try this recipe now that it is getting cooler.

yum yum EXTRA YUM

This pie was delicious and easy. I like raisins in apple pie, so next time I will add them.

sounds delish, can't wait to try it. anne in newport

I have made this twice now and it is so easy, and the guest LOVED it. I have been asked to make it again for another get together.

My hustand said why not make just a regular apple pie. But, after I made this upside down apple pie. He said it was very good. Grandma Donna

Thanks for this recipe for apple upside down pie. I have made it several times and everybody has loved it. (They wanted the recipe and I said it is so easy to make.) Anyway this year I had to make it for Thanksgiving and it was a big hit. So THANKS FOR GIVING THIS RECIPE.

My mouth is watering.. I can't wait to try this recipe, especially after reading all the reviews.

This is absolutely the best apple pie I have ever eaten. It is the only pie I have ever seen my husband eat for breakfast. He is not a dessert person but he cannot stay away from this pie. It is the only apple pie I will ever make again.

Every time I make this there is not even a crumb left! Sometimes I make 2, one for those with peanut allergies & one for the rest of us. Another winner from Mr. Food.

OMG Mr. Food........this has got to be the B-E-S-T apple pie I have ever made/eaten. However, I would rename it "Upside Down Apple Pie Dessert" because it's more like a dessert than an average somewhat dry apple pie. Like the other lady said, my husband and I pretty much ate half the pie at one time! Sooooooooooooooo good! Thank you!!!

This is our favorite apple pie of all times!!!

This is the first time I have made an apple pie. This the best recipe. My family loved it.

yummy

This is the best apple pie recipe. I have made several different kinds of apple pies in my life time but this is the best. The first time I made it I made it for my Thursday night girls get-together. It has been a request for me to make for several special occasions since. The only thing I do differently is I make my own pie crust. Glad to see that this apple pie recipe made the list of Best Recipe for 2010. Yum Yum!!!!!

I've been making this pie for over 10 years. I love it and so does everyone. It's also excellent cold for breakfast.

Best pie ever! And that's coming from someone who typically doesn't even like apple pies. A friend from church makes this for almost every pot luck meal and constantly gets special requests for it. Everyone literally races to get a piece. If they're too late, it's too bad because this pie is sooo good!! I am thrilled his wife told me where he got the recipe so now I can enjoy this pie anytime I want. YUM!

I think this was the first pie I've made in 30 years. (Never before an apple) And everyone loved it. All my girlfriends husband were amazed, none of them thought I knew where the stove, was never mind how to use it. It came out so well I made it again the next week for family

Now, that is funny. Thanks for sharing your lack of major kitchen appliance usage and knowledge...LOL

I have many apple pies in my 60+ years & this has got to be the best & easiest. My husband & I ate 1/2 of the pie in one sitting - shame on us but 000-it was SO GOOD! Thanks, Mr. Food. Making it for a dinner party tonight!

I made this pie for a cousin get-together/girls luncheon day in July. Everyone loved it and wanted the recipe!! It is truley a keeper, especially at this time of year when apples are so plentiful. Juanita H
